Sacred Fire Ritual at Starwood

Hey beautiful freaks-n-friends. If you are going to Starwood, considering joining me in creating a one night Sacred Intentional Fire Ritual. I am going to taking over some fire spot and be fire tending while you are all invited to plug in and bring it on to create a very magical and safe space where all dance, drumming, song, chant, poems, art are welcomed with an open mind and heart. Let's stock our food altar and carry water for all! Let us eschew drunken revelry for an evening and see what sort of joy we can embrace in this Fire-Cleaning. What sort of goofy joy can you share? So lets work our way through the four stages of soak, wash, rinse, and dry and see if we can't come up with a newer squeakier clean us! I'm looking to create this loveliness on Thursday night but shifting is possible depending on what spot I can commandeer. So consider joining in on the fun!

blessingsharmonyjoy!

Meta-Magick/Canadian Documentary at Starwood

Hey friends,

On Thursday, July 24, a Canadian TV crew intends to film me teaching a little bit of magick at Starwood. My actual Meta-Magick workshop is Friday - but Thurs. is the day the film crew can be there. Sooo... we're going to stage a filmable version of the workshop early Thurs. afternoon and we'll need a few people to come play. You'll need to be at least moderately clothed and willing to give permission to be filmed. If you are interested, find me on site and I'll let you know exact location and time. Or check at the info booth and we may be able to post time and location there. Join us for some guaranteed interactive fun - and maybe lasting fame (in Canada, eh)!

Is it weird that I'm already planning for Starwood? *giggle*

I put in my leave request at work and I'm starting to think about what to bring, what to wear, how the hell I'm going to get there, etc. :)

And this time I'm taking off a day after I get back so I can "resume normal operations." It was just too hard to go back to work and deal with Mundania the day after I got back last time.

I hope to see you all there. . . look for me at Ivan's dome. :)

Greetings all!
My name is Amber and I will be coming to Starwood for my first time this year. I had a couple of questions and am hoping someone may be able to help. I am coming by train from St. Louis into Erie by myself. Does anyone have suggestions on the best way for me to get from Erie to the site? Also, when does registration typiclly open? I am travelling ALOT this summer and want to take care of as much as possible in advance. Thanks in advance!
Brightest Blessings!

CoSM Full Moon/Spring Equinox Celebration, March 21st, NYC

Hey All.

I have taken a break from the facilitating the Full Moon drum and
Dance at CoSM as i have been prepping our house for a move (to
Baltimore), so it has been a while since i have been in the city to
drum and dance with the NY/NJ crew.

i hope you will consider coming into the city to celebrate the full
moon and the spring equinox if you are close to NYC. The Grey's will be away, so Mikio Kennedy
and myself will be facilitating the prayer gathering and then we will
kick it til midnight for the Full Moon Drum and Dance.

CoSM is located at 542 w 27th street, 4th floor, NY, NY 10001

In case you do not know this, and have not yet been to CoSM, the
Chapel is in all likelihood moving upstate within the next 6 months.
SO if you have been saying to yourself, i will go someday, but not
tonight....you might want to know that there are very few full moon
drum and dances that will be happening in the city....

CoSM is growing and that is GREAT! There will be shifts and changes,
art will go into hiding, or exhibition elsewhere till the new space is
built, so come if you can!

oh yeah, cost is $10...
if you need to barter for your ticket, contact me off list
(mzimani(at)gmail(dot)com, and you can help with set up....

hope to see you!
Mz. imani

upcoming DC Conscious Collaborations events:

SoulFire Props, a community finding its way HOME.

Greetings!

I hope you are all well.

The DC local SoulFire crew has developed a most harmonious relationship with each other surrounding the concepts of intentional music making, sacred space defining and transmutational shamanic healing, thru esctatic dance, art, rhythm and community. The ease and the grace with which we set our events up and take them down is truly a blessing in my life. This is mostly true cuz it is clear that there is effort and attention to detail by all of us, and that means that there is sustainability in this model. The content that shows up, with invitation is amazing. The Potlucks are more and more delicious, and the take downs are being done in under an hour! There are children, adults, "tweens", teens, folks from a plethora of different paths, and joy in the eyes of all.

i wanted to send a shout out to this collective of fire circle folks to announce that we have found a local site for Sacred SoulFire! YEAHHHHHH.

For the past 3 years we have been doing SoulFire Inside at Seekers Church in DC, developing the experience and intentional community based values of a sacred fire circle. We have wafted around looking for the right place for us to develop a longterm home for our outdoor Fire Circle work and play. While we have been told we "should" go to the same place and "should" be at the same time of year, we have not been able to deliver on that. In principle we agree with the suggestions, but previously we have not found the right spot for us that will enable and support our longterm growth and viability, as one of the many styles of fire circle magic available to those who seek it for themselves.

A few months ago, i sent out some requests to friends in the Frederick area, looking for sites for Sacred SoulFire. I got a couple interesting leads, but it took me a minute to follow thru on them. Recently Bellavia, Leah and myself took a ride up to Hawkwood Farm, and as soon as we arrived on the land, we all felt how things were beginning to fall into alignment. By the time we rode around on the land (it was cold and wet that day) and were sipping on a beverage in the farmhouse, with Erin (the guardian of the land) it was very clear to each of us, that it is well worth running the experiment of Sacred SoulFire at Hawkwood Farm, this summer.

There are so many synchronicities, they are too many to reflect here, but the 2 biggest are the name similarity of our home in the Southeast (Hawkwind Earth Renewal, Alabama) and the fact that Hawkwood is in HARMONY, MD.

It is our hope that Hawkwood Farm will provide the stability we desire. Yet we know that we have to follow our hearts, with no attachment to the outcome. Whatever happens, we have entered into this communal experiment, by accepting Hawkwood Farm invitation for us to come there. Clearly, Hawkwood Farm is supporting the sacred all night fire circle movement and appears to becoming a sanctuary for surburban and urban folks like me. This land calls out to us to bring our music, motion and mojo to work with the spirits of the place, the nature, community, self, other with a focus of helping to bring more light to the world. It is a place that will welcome you with open hands and encouragement for who you are.

Details on presenters, cost and offerings to come soon, but here is what i know now.
Sacred SoulFire-Maryland
Dates: Thursday July 3rd to Sunday July 6th, (Core Collaborator Days are Weds and Monday)
CONTENT: 5 Elemental Groups (teaching & sharing circles) that will focus on deepening our relationship with self, other, spirit & the Fire Circle Itself. Community Ritual, Community Art Projects, Gratitude Tree, Ceremonial Tattoo work with SMS, All Night Fires & more.
FOOD: We will have an AMAZING Meal Plan headed up by Darriel Park (just ask anyone who was at SSF-WV how the food was)
CHILDREN: Child Centered Programing will be instigated by Tammy (Darriel's wife)
LAND DETAILS: 91 acres to find the perfect spot for camping, woods and open fields, a pond to swim and fish in, a barn to have an inside circle if we get rain, or have a movie night in. Several Fire Circles already developed, an hour from Baltimore, and hour and a half from DC, with plenty of parking.
COST: as low as we can make it.

Hawkwood Farm is home to Erin Aylor, an amazing artist and kind person. He has welcomed us with open arms and an open heart, and all involved feel a resonance of sustainability and growth. With our (Owen and myself) plans to develop a space in Baltimore, and Erin's plans to develop his land for events like SoulFire, it seems that the universe is presenting us with an opportunity to work with the Urban/Rural model of collaboration.

FUTURE NEWS:
Long Term Event Horizons include the possiblity that we will begin Full Moon Drum and Dance events, with the colder months being at our space in Baltimore and the warmer months being at Hawkwood Farm. Time will tell us, and as soon as we have a plan for that phase, we will let you all know.

Here is a link for Erin's myspace page so you can see some images of the farm and his art.
profile.myspace.com/index.cfm

We hope you will join us, especially if you are a local to DC/Baltimore on July 4th weekend.
With that said, we all know it is difficult to schedule without conflicting other fire circle dates. My "polling of peeps" reflected that 99% of us felt that this is a good weekend for Sacred SoulFire, as the content of our work is so different from each of the other events (we know of) being offered on that weekend. We recognize the good work that each crew of folks delivers, Earth Drum Council (AHO) and 4QF (Drum and Splash). We trust the process of the interconnected, diverse Fire Circle community members being able to choose the event that most supports their personal preference of Fire Circle style.

If we do not see each other at SSF-Maryland, may the spirits weave our paths together at some other juicy event, and very soon!
Brightest of Blessings!!!

Peace Matters,

I'm looking for any ***suspender wearing*** wood busters and fire tenders on Tribe. If anyone can direct me to more I would much appreciate it. There is a tenders/busters group, invite only... I've found a few and could use some help finding more and getting this Tribe to those who would be interested.

Convocation

Convocation is an awesome Pagan Convention that happens in Michigan. It is a four day convention from Thursday evening to Sunday afternoon. This year it is February 21-24. Registration is $60 which is a bargain; hotel rooms are $89. I've gone to this convention the past three years and had an excellent time. The website is www.convocation.org. The schedule is up so you can see what kind of classes they are offering this year. Friday and Saturday night they hold the biggest drum circle I've ever taken part in (Drumming to Spiritual Ecstasy). There is a Masquerade Ball on Saturday night that everyone dresses up for; they have DJ spinning dance music. Mateyo Empie is an excellent teacher; she does the Pervuian Fire Ceremony and the Cone of Power both of which are very powerful rituals. I've always heard the Gnostic Mass is well done but never had a chance to go. They hold a men's and women's ritual at the same time. I've attended the women's ritual the past two years and have had very moving experiences. They choose a different theme each year by pulling a random card out of a tarot deck. This year's theme is the Temperance card.

Waking Dream seeks giant puppet builders and performers

Waking Dream, the performance company that has brought giant puppets to Starwood for the last five years, is seeking artists interested in helping us build and perform new work at this year's Starwood, and at other regional gatherings this summer.

Experience not neccessary, however we are looking for people who have confidence making things and performing in front of people. Must be will to challenge ones self and be willing to perform in bizarre, sometime uncomfortable costumes.

Our studio and workshop is located in Greenwich, Connecticut, about 45 minutes from New York.

from early Brushwood times: The Story of Drumfest-the day the cows came home.

This was written by Tom Herr with an excerpt from Dennis Murphy. If there's something that you don't get at first, keep reading. Most everything gets explained sooner or later.
This festival was my second festival ever. I didn't know at the time how much new stuff I was around for-I thought that's how they'd always done firecircles...what a nice "default" setting!

The story of Drum Fest

The day the cows came home.

The word was spoken and the GroupleDome was manifest. The word was BULL, as given to the messenger, communed from the most high, AZO. The traditions and customs were new but the magick was ancient. The fire circle lasted not one but two nights! An entire weekend! From Friday at 6:00 p.m. until Sunday at noon the fire burned as the drummers drummed and the dancers danced. It was the first weekend in July 1991 and we had gathered to construct an astral temple over the GroupleDome thus consecrating our new place of worship.

But this story begins much earlier. With the neo-pagan movement in full force, Starwood was a fledgling festival that drew hundreds of pagans from all the over the country. They came together to share ideas and experiences, explore their consciousness and celebrate life for four days of joyous gathering. But in the early days of Starwood the only all night fire was the Saturday Night bonfire. On some nights, there would be practice fires, lasting two or three hours but it would soon end and the camp would settle in for a quite evening.

THE COMMUNICATION:
DM communes with AZO
It was at a Goddess gathering in southern Ohio. I was pondering the act of Drumming as being a means for doing a "Group Will Working" as an extension of the solitary act of magickal will that all Thelemites are familiar with. Being well experienced in being told to stop drumming whenever the drumming seemed to get very energetic and going in the direction of the "unknown might happen"--or especially when the first set of drummers decided it was time they were tired and didn't want to drum anymore--or maybe when those who felt responsible wanted to go to sleep, or didn't want to be policing the circle anymore, or maybe when people just wanted to go to sleep, etc. etc., --- I decided to try and convince my friends to try and drum, to keep a beat, all night long with the end act of watching the sun come up, where we would greet the sun with Liber Resh, a Hail Ra. This would complete the magickal "Group" act, and bring our success. Any force (like weather), people or persons, etc. that attempts to stop us we would regard as "Demons" as described in an article that AC wrote, anyway, this was done, we drummed all night, had a great time, and it seemed that everyone that stayed up with us had a wonderful, delightful, happy night. Drummers, dancers, hangers-out, we had lots of fun and energy. Until someone came to us complaining very loudly that they couldn't sleep, that they had to pack up and leave early and that we kept them up all night. Also, we gave this person a terrible headache. Of course I was looking at another demon, and tried to ignore it. All of a sudden, I was being called an "Asshole", which became my next chant "I'm and AZO" -- on and on. "I'm an AZO, and you're an AZO too". AZO was the name of the energized electronic cow that we've been carrying around, Black and White, Gnostic-like, neither good or bad. A cow to make Moses envious. AZO, "A" the beginning, "Z" the end, and "O" what we do. I took this as a play on the Alpha and the Omega of the Greek alphabet, and used in the Bible. The English alphabet has the Alpha and the Zeta.
So, this is my story, for now. How we started drumming all night, and how I became an AZO. My communion.
DM

In the summer 1990 Starwood found a new home at Brushwood Folklore Center. That first season we gathered for Summer Solstice or Solsquish as it is affectionately remembered, then Starwood, then Summerhawk and finally Grouplefest. At each one of these events there was a fire that lasted all night long, every night and quiet camping was over there. In preparation for Grouplefest, Dennis and Ed erected the GroupleDome, an incredible design engineered by DM. No longer would we make O’s in an open field, now we had a temple, a structure to cover with tarps to protect us from rain and wind. The Grouple Dome allowed us to hang beer cans which could then be easily passed around the circle and shared, Chinese lanterns could be raised for magnificent displays, we could trap beavers and had something constructive to work on during the daylight hours. The Cult of the Living Bull finally had a home.

That first season was wonderful, marvelous, and spectacular. Oh, there were a few kinks to work out but all in all it was a great year and everyone looked forward to next season. And during the New Years Eve gathering that year, Frank gave Dennis, Ed and Tom each with a pair of red suspenders.

The Original thought
Over the course of the winter, while planning for the coming season, an incredible event happened. Mad Dog had an original thought! We tried to stop him but it was to no avail. He said, “since we have a fire every night, all night long why can’t we keep it up all day long, too. for an entire weekend?” Others replied “we can’t stay up three days straight, we need to sleep and eat sometimes.” Mad Dog actually had a logical response, “ we’ll drum and dance in shifts, each person will sign up and be responsible to keep the beat or dance for at least one hour.” But this was not the end to Mad Dog’s thinking, when asked what the purpose of this drumming epic would be he replied, “to consecrate the dome, we’ll build an astral temple to protect our new home.” And so the idea for Drum Fest was born and the weekend of July 5,6, & 7, 1991 was set.

Red Susupenders
Winter passed and spring soon arrived. Summer Solstice was here and the first festival of the year was under way. We had a cult (Cult of the Living Bull), we had a home (GroupleDome), we had mantra (BULL), we had our own currency (grouples but that’s another story) and we had a god (Azo). Saturday afternoon, Dennis and Ed put on the red suspenders from New Years Eve and were drumming in the dome. When Tom came to join them, they suggested he too put on his suspenders. However, his suspenders were in the little house where Ed was living at the time. Ed went up to the little house, got the suspenders, brought them to the dome and handed them to Tom, while in the presence of other azos. Tom put the suspenders on and then there were three suspended azos drumming in the dome. Well, the other azos in the dome saw Ed and Dennis present Tom with red suspenders and began to wonder what the red suspenders meant. At first, ‘nothing‘ was uttered. Then DM finally said, “you gotta stay up until dawn and talk to the guy who gives out the suspenders then you’ll know.” And soon, grouplers were staying up until dawn and being suspended, one by one; the red suspender tradition was born.

A few short weeks later it was time for Drumfest. Nearly 100 pagans showed up. Mad Dog had prepared a sign in sheet with 42 time slots for drumming and 42 slots for dancing. The sheet was placed on the altar in the dome and everyone was instructed to pick at least one hour for which they would be responsible to keep the beat or make O’s. In addition to keeping the beat, everyone was to focus on the formation of the astral temple and add whatever astral décor they felt was appropriate. The woodbusters, cheerfully, spent the entire afternoon collecting wood and building the fire. All time slots were filled and at exactly 6pm, or there abouts, the fire was lit, the drummers started drumming and the dancers started dancing.

The savior appears
Friday evening, in the dome, was normal, for the dome. The chaos was ordered with extra sauce, the drummers were drumming and the dancers were dancing as one might expect. But those outside the dome were dealing with an uninvited guest, soon to be revealed as the savior.
Sometime after the lighting of the fire, an unknown black dog, which for obvious reasons came to be known as ‘The Black Dog’ wandered into camp. He was the friendliest dog you could ever imagine. He would sit, he would roll over, he knew to go off into the bushes to do you know what, everyone fell in love with The Black Dog. Everyone except Kiva, the Saint Bernard. Kiva didn’t fall in love with Black Dog, Kiva wanted to eat the Black Dog. The Black Dog, however, did not seem to be afraid of Kiva, since she was on a chain which was attached to a tree. The Black Dog loved to lie down just out of Kiva’s reach, he never barked or harassed Kiva in any way. He just laid down where she could see him. Kiva, who was also known as the ‘Bark of the Night’ lived up to her name and barked and barked. Kiva, at the end of her rope tried her best to eat The Black Dog.
Since Kiva was a paying camper, we had no choice but put the Black Dog out of Kiva’s sight. Since he would not leave and everyone liked him anyway, it was decided that he would be put on a leash and tied to a tree out Kiva’s sight. We all took turns visiting him and feeding him and taking him for walks but he had to stay on the leash in order to silence the “Bark of the Night.” And the whole time this was going on, back in the dome, the drummers were drumming and the dancers were dancing.

As Friday evening progressed into early Saturday morning and first shift gave way to second, the drummers were still drumming and the dancers were still dancing. This was, of course the busiest time of day in grouple land and the dome was packed. Before long it was third shift and Azo, our battery operated god, was making O’s. Then came the blue hour, just before sunrise, and discordian juice. As the first rays of light hit the morning sky and we caught our first glimpse of the orb peeping through the trees in the east, the drummers stopped drumming and the dancers stopped dancing, just for a moment, as we greeted the sun in our customary manner:
Hail unto thee who art Ra in thy rising,
Even unto thee who art Ra thy strength,
Who travelest over the heavens in thy bark
At the uprising of the Sun.
Tahuti standeth in pleasure at the prow
And Ra Hoor abidth at the helm
Hail unto thee, from the abodes of the night.
BBBUUULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!
Once again, the drummers started drumming and the dancers started dancing and Saturday morning (first shift) was under way. First shift was rather long on Saturday, 6am – 11pm or so, but throughout, there was always at least one drummer drumming and at least one dancer dancing. First shift was a time for sleep, food, more sleep and preparation for second and third shifts. Second shift, however, turned out to be a bit more exciting!
Now, we had all been focusing on the astral temple, each of us adding our own special something when sometime during second shift, our combined efforts seemingly manifested into a spectacular coagulation of magickal manifestations. Jimbo was outside of the dome when Mad Dog and Tom heard him calling. They walked out to see what Jimbo was so excited about. He pointed toward the southeastern sky and there the most amazing electrical storm one can imagine. It looked like the scene from “Close Encounters of a Third Kind” when the mother ship was descending from the clouds. The lightning bolts were flashing in sinc with the rhythm of the drums. Before long most everyone was out in the field watching the amazing show. But off course, while all this was going on, the drummers kept drumming and the dancers kept dancing.

The Dome is stripped
As third shift began, the lightning storm was still going on but now the clouds began to roll in but not over, Brushwood. The entire sky was filled with clouds except for huge hole over us. Until the blue hour, when the clouds closed in and the hole began to close. Just as Mary Ann’s shift began, IT happened!
Outside the dome, the field was engulfed in clouds, the wind picked up and the Dome began shake. The TyVeck wrapping began to rustle. (Note: TyVeck is an extremely durable, plastic coated paper product used to cover new homes before the siding goes on. It had proven, in the past, to be a very good weather barrier when wrapped around the dome and secured with staples.) All of sudden, in the blink of an eye, the entire dome was stripped! The TyVeck was completely ripped off the dome, and a bolt of lightning hit the fire pit in the center of the dome!! At this point most azos had returned to a tent or car or some kind of shelter. Everyone, except for the drummer who was still drumming and a dancer who was still dancing and a few spectators, spectating because after all, in spite of everything, it was quite a spectacular sight.
If a tornado is a ten, this storm was a nine, not quite a funnel cloud but damn close! Now keep in mind that Mary Ann is a small woman and she was the drummer, drumming. The dancer who was Content was dancing and ,of course, Mad Dog was there too. Tom, Michele and her son Jamie were the spectators sitting on an air mattress next to the drums. At the moment the dome was stripped, Mary Ann was drumming and the coat she was wearing began to flap in the wind and started to blow her backwards. The dancer who was Content held Mary Ann in place, so she could continue drumming. Mad Dog was holding down the drums. One of the spectators looked up and saw that the tarp, hanging over the drums, was filled with water and about to dump on the drummer who was still drummimg, the dancer who was Content holding the drummer in place and Mad Dog. He pointed at the tarp and yelled, the dancer who was Content began directing the water to the end of the tarp so it would run off. But before the water reached the edge, the support rope broke and about thirty gallons of ice cold, rain water dumped on the spectators. But the drums were safe, the drummer was still drumming, the dancer was still dancing and still Content and Mad Dog was still Mad Dog.

The Levitation
Ralph was in his tent when the storm hit. Sitting in the lotus position, trying to keep his tent from blowing away but his efforts were unsuccessful. The tent did blow away, with Ralph inside! He actually levitated inside the tent as the wind blew the little dome across the field. The tent was rolling on the ground as he was lifted up, still in the lotus, and carried along.

The manifestation of the gods
The three soaked spectators had to run for dryer ground but Maryann the drummer, the dancer who was Content and Mad Dog stayed in the naked dome and kept Drum Fest alive as the storm passed. When the winds died down, the rain turned to mist and the fog began to clear. There in north field, was the final confirmation that Drum Fest was a success. Heading toward the dome, was a heard of cows, lead by a bull! The gods had come home!
And come home they did, right into our campsite and started walking up the road! Someone heard a noise outside of their tent, unzipped the door and a cow stuck its head right inside! Even though we were laughing our Azos off we realized we may have a problem on our hands. When all of sudden, out of nowhere, comes The Black Dog. He turned out to be a cow herder. He began circling the cows and barking at them. He herded them away from camp all on his own. As he came running back to the dome we were all cheering him and giving him treats, he was the savior. Is a god to live in a dog? Well maybe not, but The Black Dog sure can heard a bunch of gods!
In a short while the cows once again started heading toward the dome. We told The Black Dog they were coming back and he immediately went to work and directed them back up the hill. This happened about two or three times before the gods finally went in the other direction and we celebrated with The Black Dog for a job well done. Of course, while this was going on the drummer was still drumming and the dancer was still dancing. Azos were once again gathering in the dome for the morning ritual.
Hail unto thee who art Ra in thy rising,
Even unto thee who art Ra thy strength,
Who travelest over the heavens in thy bark
At the uprising of the Sun.
Tahuti standeth in pleasure at the prow
And Ra Hoor abidth at the helm
Hail unto thee, from the abodes of the night.
BBBUUULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!

The End
At this time the festival was nearing the end, we were sharing our stories about what we had experienced and how we had survived the storm. Everyone felt the working was successful and the Dome was duly consecrated. And at exactly twelve noon the fire was still burning, the drummers were still drumming and the dancers were still dancing, because no one had a watch and we didn’t know what time it was and didn’t care either. Sometime after noon, the drummers did stop drumming and the dancers did stop dancing, but only long enough to have a closing ceremony in true Cult of the Living Bull fashion. Once the ceremony was complete, the drummers started drumming again and the dancers started dancing again and one by one the azos began to break camp and head for home. But before leaving, each carfull of azos stopped at the dome to say farewell to the drummers who were till drumming and the dancers who were still dancing . “Merry meet and merry part and merry meet again.”

Bon Voyage -forwarded from Rev. Ivan Stang

This morning, Oct. 16, our friend Chas Smith peacefully vacated Earth Plane One for
greener pastures.

Chas was hospitalized a month ago with double pneumonia, and had a severe stroke while

in the hospital. He had also been fighting Hodgkin's lymphoma, a type of cancer which
he
had beaten in his youth but which killed his brother several years ago, and for which
he
had recently started getting radiation treatments. Chas was a really tough old soldier
but
nobody could fight this so many illnesses and traumas forever.

Chas had just turned 50.

As a music professor at Cleveland State University, Chas taught the most popular
course at
the whole school, a class in the history of rock and roll and its roots. Chas put much
more
into his class than just the history, however. He was beloved by students as much for
his
spontaneous rants on life and society in general, or on space and science, or whatever
had
grabbed his interest that week, as for his musical subject matter.

He also taught regular and very popular workshops in music and consciousness at
Starwood, Winterstar, and Sirius Rising. He taught basic musical composition to little
kids
through a program with the Cleveland Opera. He authored three textbooks on the history

of rock and roots music: "From Woodstock to the Moon: The Cultural Evolution of
Rock
Music," "The Soul of Sunrise: Grassroots Music in America," and another
which was only
recently finished.

The focal point of his life, however, was playing music. He was in The Clocks, a
popular
Cleveland punk band in the late '70s and early '80s. During the 1990s and early 2000s
he
fronted Einstein's Secret Orchestra or ESO (with Dave DeLuca, Bob Mozick and Michele
George (to whom he was married for several years). Two excellent studio albums and
many good live recordings exist. In recent years ESO became more of a blues, classic C&W
and jam band with many different members. Chas also toured with Cobra Verde as
keyboardist.

Cleveland radio listeners heard Chas's weekly show on WCSB, Swamp Radio, every
Thursday night for over 20 years. This eclectic show included not only whatever music
Chas was into at the time, but live performances, jams, and also improv comedy and
plays
-- first with Brain Rot Theater (radio comedy sketches by Dave DeLuca, Dan Didonato,
and
Chas) and later with DeLuca, myself and my wife "Princess Wei." Chas also
took calls from
listeners -- and he got some pretty wild listeners. The bits recorded on Swamp Radio
were
a mainstay of the syndicated SubGenius show "Hour of Slack" for almost a
decade.

Almost all SubGenius events in the Cleveland and Northern Ohio area featured ESO (or
sometimes just Chas, solo) as the musical headliner from 1992 to 2002.

Chas was an outdoorsman -- not a hunter, but a hiker and camper. His seasonal camp at
Brushwood Folklore Center in western rural New York grew into a sort of giant art
gallery
and performance area where some of the coolest events at Brushwood took place -- and
if
you're familiar with Brushwood, that's saying quite a bit. Variously called
Tranquility Base
and Club Tiki Banzai, Chas's parties (including the annual Rumble in the Jungle) are
legendary. When Chas wasn't playing, he was DJing.

The camp -- and his performance costumes or "rock star duds" -- were outlets
for Chas's
considerable graphic arts talents. He had some of the most psychedelic outfits I've
ever
seen in rock shows, decorated by hand in his inimitable style. His home and especially
the
recording studio in the basement benefited from his handiwork and seemingly boundless
energy.

Chas will be remembered by thousands -- his almost countless former students, his many

fellow musicians and performers, his camping buddies and the many communities to
which he was such a big contributor -- Brushwood, A.C.E. in Cleveland, The Church of
the
SubGenius, WCSB, Cleveland State, and probably many more of which I have yet to learn.

Chas wasn't the only reason I left Dallas for Cleveland, but he was definitely one of
the
main ones. He is already greatly missed.

A deep and heartfelt thanks to Bob Mozick for being such a rock for Chas and his
family
and friends through this whole hard time.

The funeral will be held at Brickman Funeral Home in Willoughby, Ohio; we'll announce
the
exact date and place here as soon as possible.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

FROM PRINCESS WEI'S LETTER TO THE CHAMELEON CLUB/ A.C.E.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of sad tidings, and they don't come much sadder than this
one.

Bob Mozik called me at 7:30 this morning to tell me Chas had left this mortal plane.

He said Chas had a small army of visitors over the weekend - we think he was waiting
to
see as many friends as he could see before he left (or hear them as it was more toward
the
end).

A Beachland Ballroom benefit concert is in the works. His memorial will most likely
take
place at Brickman Funeral Home in Willoughby, OH. I will post any more info as soon as
I
know it.

Chas was overcome by multiple medical problems. While at the Clinic, he bravely fought
4
separate infections, double pneumonia, his Hodgkin's disease, which had come out of
remission, and massive stroke damage. The thing to remember is that to the end, Chas
kept a bright outlook. Always the thumbs up - while he was able.

Also, the doctors at the clinic used all of their knowledge and expertise to do
everything
they could for him. I visited him every other day, and witnessed very compassionate
care
each time I saw him.

Thanks to Bob Mozik, he had music in his ears the last week or so of his life. Bob
bought a
CD player and brought in many mix disks of Chas' favorite music. One of the nurses
said
she thought a CD player should be standard equipment for every hospice room - what
could be better than soothing music to allow you to be far away while still physically
there?

Chas' family had no idea how many friends Chas had. They were bowled over by the
number of cards, gifts, flowers and visitors he received. I pray that that bowling
over can
continue when many contributions toward the Medical Fund his father set up begin
coming in.

Again, donations for Chas can be sent directly to:

Donation for Charles V. Smith
U.S. Bank 26410 Lakeshore
Euclid, Ohio 44132

Please make checks payable to Donation of Charles V. Smith

I wanted to make the Starwood and Brushwood community aware of an event I am
putting together here in beautiful Warwick, NY. There is an incredible
historic horse farm in this town situated on 230 acres of land which
has generously allowed us to hold space on their property for a Sacred
Fire Circle.

Some of you may have heard of this place...it is called Borderland
Farm. It may sound familiar because just this past Mothers Day 2007,
the magnificant 1800's Victorian farm house which was a landmark in
this town burned to the ground taking the life of the farm's barn
manager. What many people do not know is that on the same site the
original 1700's Colonial farm house also burned to the ground many
years before. Oddly, the barns which are right next to the homesite
housing dozens of animals, where never touched by the fire on either
occassion. It is many people's thought in the community that some type
of harm was done by people on this land maybe to Native Americans
which is why this tragic history keeps reliving itself in an effort to
remove the human presence but never harming the animals in any way.

It is our intention to do a ritual on the spot of the old homesite to
clear/cleanse the area...remove the destructive aspect of fire from
the spot...and take it to a new place on the property where we will
use it for good and celebration and honor it's power to heal in a
place where it has done a tremendous amount to hurt in the past. It is
our feeling that a tribal ritual on these lands will honor the spirit
of those who may have perished, release them and thusly bring a
harmony and balance back that is obviously very much needed.

This event will be held Saturday Night, October 20th. We will begin
with the opening circle and cleansing ritual at the homesite promptly
at 7:00...and then move to the Sacred Circle site to drum and dance
until 12:00 midnight...when we will celebrate the new day's arrival
and hopefully a new energy brought to these grounds. Everyone is
welcomed to stay and continue on drumming and dancing until the
morning...and of course you are welcomed to camp out overnight as well!

It is our hope to use this place next year for a weekend festival and
to continue to use it for years to come for this higher purpose.

Please, Please, Please come join us...we will be opening this up to
the community in general so that they may participate and heal as
well. There will be many people there who have never experienced a
Sacred Circle and so it would be great if as many people could come as
possible who are "veterans" so that these new people feel the power of
our beautiful tribal spirit!!

Any suggestions would be GREAT as I am literally putting this together
starting today....I would love to hear from a Shaman or
Priest/Priestess who would have advice or words of wisdom on our
ground cleansing ritual.

Thanks so Much....MANY BLESSINGS!!

after a ten year hiatus, i returned to starwood and brushwood.
wanted to send a shout out of gratitude to all the brothers and sisters that made me feel at home with my djembe, the elecctonic acoustic blending of soulfire eletrique and the show we did on saturday night.

we as the rhythm shamans, had a blast and look forward to playing at brushwood again soon.

Forestdance Mass and Costa Rica, and Incus show updates

hey folks,

Incus's showtime on the main stage has been changed to 9:30-11, with Starwind and the Raft going on at 8. I'm writing this from our blue blus en route to Brushwood. We are also doing a performance at the Machine, where the Pufferdome used to be located on Thursday night from eleven to two.

and now... if you are interested in checking out some of the serious delicious magic that we play with, that helps inspire us to be who we are... check it....

Forestdance Mass. and Costa Rica Updates

Hi folks,

Registration for Forestdance Costa Rica is officially open. Come and do the sacred at the foot of Costa Rica’s largest waterfall, the Diamante Falls. Our hosts there from the Art of Union came to the very first Forestdance in Georgia during the Harmonic Concordance in 2003. The gathering in Costa Rica will be the 10th Forestdance since that magical week. This gathering will be Feb. 19th-23rd. Registration includes meals, and people are welcome to come a couple of days early and stay late for a small fee for lodging and food.

To check availability and rates for flights I suggest trying Spirit Air. You will need to fly into San Jose, and from there either rent a car, take a $3 bus to Musoc and a $12 cab ride to the town of San Salvador, or book a space on a shuttle van from the airport. The retreat at Diamante Sanctuary is called Heaven on Mother Earth, or H.O.M.E., and it is indeed a lush and immaculate taste of paradise. We will be truly blessed to be together on that sacred land, doing what we love to do.

Forestdance Massachusetts is just around the corner over the week surrounding Labor Day. There will be 8 seed groups to choose from. Read more about what the seed groups are about on the main site. The gathering runs from Aug. 29th- Sept. 4th. Wednesday and Thursday we will be settling in together, with a short fire on Thursday night. We will do all night fires for three night in a row from Friday to Monday morning. Monday and Tuesday will be integration days with connecting, heart sharing, entertainment, and community building exercises. Seed groups will run every day, and will run at different times, so each attendee can be part of more than one. Here are your choices with the name of the hub facilitator:

Vocal Magic: Billy Bardo
Herbalism & the Root Fire: Una Gallagher
Yoga: Lotus
Sustainability: Joel Sindelar & Orion Kriegman
Spoken Work/Speak your World: Travis Bowman
Percussion Around the Fire: Jon Holland and Lisa Bouchie
Body Workers/Healers Group: Missy Wilreker
Sacred Movement and Dance: Shakti Rowan

For descriptions, bios, other class information and tons of additional info, check out www.Forestdance.net.

This year our gathering is being brought to you by the heARTbeatcollective: Healing and Expressive ARTists for Balance, Ecology, Awareness, and Transformation. Find out more about this new group at www.heARTbeatcollective.org.

Looking forward to seeing you around the fire,

So, I need a ride for me, my large lizard, and all of our stuff, which isn't a whole lot...my camping gear will meet me there.

Please help!

Hey all,
I'm driving to Brushwood from Fairfield, CT and need someone to split the drive (time and cost) with me.
OR someone else leaving from the same area where we can follow each other out. I have my dad's old Volvo Stationwagon and am not sure
as to how it's running (though mom assures me it's in great shape and has been tuned up recently) (my dad passed on almost 2 years ago- so noone drives this car when i'm not in town. I live in Austin, TX for the rest of the year. I summer up there to get out of the heat. (and attend Starwood)
Ideally i want to leave on Thursday July 19th to get a few days of Sirius Rising as well.

StarWood?

Yes,
I'll admit it.
I'm a StarWood Virgin...

But I am a Festival Whore.
Back when money came easer I bounced around the country going to AnyThing that sounded new and fun;
Rainbow Gathering,
Burning Man,
Playa Del Fuego,
ect.

So I was just wondering what I can expect?
Is there anything that it can be compared to?
What's it like?

WNY Wiccan power-flex for new position?

Hi all,

Been observing/sensing some oddness in the air lately... besides the excitement of Starwood planning, some other less bright energies...

A friend told me something about the physical death of a local WNY Wiccan leader, and other potential leaders using their "influence" to show their strength as viable leaders... anyone know anything about this?

Fire Circles on YouTube?

Greetings Friends!

We're thrilled to let you know that a great video has been posted to YouTube showing the Alchemical Fire Circle, with voiceover by Jeff McBride explaining how the dancing is analogous to the orbits of the planets.

If you've been wondering about what we'll be doing at Fires Rising at Four Quarters Farm in a few weeks, take a look at this, and then pass the word! The video is from a documentary produced by Vision TV about Jeff's magic profession and his work with alchemical fire circle with Abbi. You'll see many familiar faces here.... We hope you will enjoy and want to put out huge thanks to the Four Quarters office guy Micheal for putting this together!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSjnq_ALNVY

Please, tell your friends about it! If any of you have a YouTube account, we'd
appreciate you linking/favoriting it.

Once you've seen the video, you can go to
http://www.4qf.org/_FiresRising/index.htm
and register online for an incredible and magickal gathering!

We hope to see you there!

Hey There...

So.. I was thinking of swinging by Starwood this year...

I go to Pennsic every year.. and with the scheduling and all... it might not be so bad for me to come to Starwood for 3 or 4 days or so.. then on Friday drive to Pennsic...

Is this possible?

I don't know if any of you know me out there..

Couple of things...

1. I am a middle eastern musician/teacher from NYC. I teach doumbek all over the country as well as perform on Oud, Cumbus, etc.

2. I would totally need to leach/mooch off of people. :) My pennsic friends are bringing tents/bed/etc. for me.. so when I drive through i'll only have instruments and sarongs or something :)

In return I can offer lessons in pretty much anything :) Umm.. playing music for you and your dancers...umm... hugs?

Was wondering if anyone could point me towards some info on Starwood? Heard it was in upstate New York and found a website, but it wasn't updated for the dates it is taking place this year or how one goes about registering/buying tickets to go? Any help?

Cheers!

Most gracious and overwhelming thank you's to all who I connected with this year at Starwood. I've been two years previous to this but never seemed to really make any connections like I did this year. My most heartfelt thanks to Ro, Amy, Jada, Sam, Shawn and the rest of Evil Camp, the Puppet People, the Squid Dome and last but not least, the Roundhouse for making this year particularly wonderful and memorable for me......:)

See you all next year, same place, (directly across from the Roundhouse), same time, (generally speaking), WITH BELLS ON! WOOO!!!

Does anyone know Prometheus? The man who ran the video projection tent that was just outside the roundhouse this year?

Unfortunately it seems he may have left with a pair of wings that Felicia let him use the last night (of course these things certainly happen in the Starwood enviornment *g*)

Anyhow, we're just looking for contact information for him so we can figure out if he does indeed have the wings or if he left them with someone who knows Felicia or what have you.

If you do know him and feel more comfortable giving Felicia's contact info to him rather than sending out his contact info she can be contacted at
feliciamcneill@yahoo.com.

Thanks a lot folks, see you next year (or sooner)

I just wanted to thank all the cool peoples that I met at the Didge Dome and especially those who keep it up and alive! I had a great time and feel like I have a new home.... away from home. Awsome workshops, great vibes!
Blessings,

Dance Magic Wokshop at STARWOOD

The Starwood Festival is just around the corner (whew hew) and I'm happy to announce that I'll be teaching a DANCE MAGIC workshop at the festival this year!!! Heres my Workshop Description...

DANCE MAGIC with Carrie Konyha
Learn to consciously raise and direct energy with ritualistic dance. Workshop participants will gain an understanding of the fundamentals of Dance Magic as we explore the dances of the elements; Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Spirit and techniques for spell casting with dance. Workshop also covers techniques for practicing dance magic as a form of moving meditation, personal empowerment and holistic healing. This comprehensive, introductory workshop provides participants with info needed to establish a Dance Magic practice of their own. Attendees are encouraged to put these principles into practice during festival rituals and drum circles.
